With approximately 1.2 million residents, Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK behind London, and the social, cultural, financial, and commercial centre of both the East and West Midlands.
Whatever your cup of tea, there’s lots to see and do in Birmingham. The Birmingham Hippodrome is the UK’s most popular theatre and the home of the Birmingham Royal Ballet; Symphony Hall hosts spectacular performances from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; and the esteemed Barber Institute of Fine Arts houses classic works from the likes of Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
Birmingham also boasts more Michelin-star restaurants than any other UK city outside of London while hosting a diverse array of cultural festivals throughout the year, including the Birmingham Comedy Festival, Birmingham Pride and the Birmingham International Jazz Festival.
The city has a rich cultural heritage. Birmingham is the home of heavy metal, having produced ground-breaking bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and half of Led Zeppelin during the 1960s and 1970s. The city’s musical exports also include acts like Duran Duran, Electric Light Orchestra, UB40 and The Streets.
Of course, you can’t talk about Brum without mentioning sports. The city is home to two of the country’s oldest football clubs, Birmingham City F.C. and Aston Villa. In fact, The Football League was founded in 1888 by Birmingham resident William McGregor. Brum also lays claim to being the home of Lawn Tennis, which was developed in a back garden in Edgbaston in 1859!
From its roots as a market town in the medieval period to a major cog in the Industrial Revolution, during which it transformed the way the world works with the invention of the Watt steam engine, Birmingham has remained a city on the rise. Today, it stands as a major international commercial centre, as well as a hotspot for higher education thanks to its five universities.
